Every child deserves a responsible mentor and tutor!
GrandParents Hands and Children Charity stands committed to protecting our youth.
Families trust us with their children, and we honor that trust by following the highest standards of safety, transparency, and care.
We include this page because youth safety is not optional — it is the foundation of every mentoring, tutoring, and community‑based program we offer. By aligning our work with Ohio’s statewide expectations, we ensure that every volunteer, mentor, and partner organization meets the same level of accountability required in schools and youth‑serving environments across the state.
This page helps families, schools, and community partners see that:
We take youth safety seriously
We follow state‑approved best practices
We maintain consistent standards across all mentoring settings
We operate with integrity, professionalism, and care
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) is the state agency responsible for ensuring that every student in Ohio learns in a safe, supportive, and high‑quality environment. ODEW sets the standards that guide schools, community programs, and youth‑serving organizations across the state.
For volunteers, ODEW is important because it establishes the expectations that protect students and strengthen mentoring programs. These include:
Student safety and supervision requirements
Mandated reporting responsibilities
Background check standards (BCI/FBI)
High‑quality mentoring and tutoring practices
Trauma‑informed, culturally responsive approaches
By following ODEW guidelines, volunteers help create safe, consistent, and trustworthy learning spaces where young people can thrive.
To protect students, Ohio requires volunteers and staff who work with youth to complete official background checks through the Ohio Attorney General’s Webcheck system. This is the same process used by schools, churches, and youth programs across the state.

FBI (federal) background check

Required IDs and forms

Schools do not provide their own background‑check forms. Instead, they direct volunteers to a certified Webcheck provider, such as:
Local police departments
Sheriff’s offices
Educational Service Centers (ESCs)
Approved fingerprinting centers
Most Ohio schools require:
A BCI check
An FBI check
A valid ID
The school district code (entered by the Webcheck operator)
